The Mother Church of The Diocese of South Carolina, established in 1680 just 10 years after the colony Charles Town was settled. The original church was built on the corner of Meeting and Broad Streets, which is the present site for St. Michael's Church. At one point, the congregation split between the two Episcopal Churches, so they have shared history.
The first building was severely damaged by a hurricane in 1710 and the Second Church also sustained hurricane damage while it was being built.
The rebuilding was delayed for several years due to fires, hurricane, epidemics of smallpox, yellow fever, slave uprisings, Indian attacks, and the threat of war with the Spanish. Finally, after quite a few trials, the congregation was able to move into the current church building (which was almost finished) in May of 1868. Whew, I'm sure that was a relief! The spire was completed in 1850.
This is just a small slice of the history this church has experienced. There is more to be found online and on their website if you would like to learn more.
